Gansu Research Institute for Water Conservancy is the unique comprehensive scientific research organization which is mainly engaging in water research and extension tasks of Gansu province with technical consultant and training service functions. At present, the institution has formed four professional orientations involved of Water Resources and Environment, Rural Water Resources, Rainwater Harvesting, Water Resources and Hydroelectric Projects. Meanwhile, it also undertakes the tasks of China’s Foreign Aid Training on Rainwater Harvesting, Demonstration and Extension of Hydro engineering Technology, quality inspection of water resources and hydroelectric projects, and irrigation experiment and training, Sci-Tech Info exchange of Gansu province. The institute has been ratified as international Sci-Tech Cooperation Base for demonstration on rainwater resources and water resources high efficiency use by Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China in 2012.

Over the years, the institute has successfully undertaken 80 research topics sponsored by Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Science and Technology, Gansu Province Water Resources Bureau, Gansu Province Science and Technology Bureau, 30 research achievements has been verified to be domestic leading grade or international advanced level, and won 1 item of the third prize from National Science and Technology progress Award, the second and third prize from Provincial Science and Technology progress Award 12 items and 14 items, respectively, 3 items from Provincial Agricultural Technology Extension Award, and attained 5 items invention patents. More than one hundred technical papers has been published in the domestic and international academic journals, meanwhile, published 5 monographs, and presided and composed 2 national engineering norms, as well as finished 1 provincial norms. The institute owed over 80 sets of advanced instrumental facilities for testing and/or experiment on field of hydrology, irrigation, soil moisture, infrastructure quality of water projects etc.

In recent years, the institute attaches great importance to international cooperation and exchange, has successfully fulfilled 12 international cooperation projects, organized two international academic exchanges conference, contributed 8 overseas projects for technical assistance, and conducted 14 external technical training courses. The institute rewarded grand prize on contest of “World Water Activity” organized on “3rd world Water Forum” in Japan 2003. Presently, the institute is authorized to act as national secretariat of Rainwater Harvesting committee of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, plays a unique role on promotion of technical development and academic exchanges on rainwater harvesting in China, meanwhile acts a global leading role on extension and technique development on rainwater harvesting and utilization.
