Chinese scientists have achieved a major breakthrough in developing new rice strains during the 10th Five-year period. The efforts have raised the yield of hybrid rice by 20% to 30%, with super rice strains?¯ per mu(1mu=1/15 ha.) yield exceeding 800 kg. A super rice strain in the Liaoyou Series registered a per mu yield of 1,077 kg.
Preliminary statistics show that China has during the 10th Five-year period established 113 super rice strains, with a range of hybrid combinations having a per mu yield exceeding 800 kg. For example, Zhongdao 88S/0293 recorded a per mu yield of 807.4 kg, Chuanxiangyou 2 a 840 kg, Youming II 86 847.4kg, Zhongzheyou I 818.88-833.88 kg, 2 You 6 805 kg, Dyou 527 837-884 kg, and Jiyou I (Gangyou 827) 869-998.5 kg.
While producing more yield, super rice strains have enjoyed an improved quality. For instance, all the quality indicators of Nei2You6 strain have reached a high end national standard, ten quality indicators of Guodao I is up to the same standard, and Zhongzheyou I sits in the first place under a local grading system.
A super rice combination, named Liangyoupeijiu, has been grown over 70 million mu of farmlands on a combine basis, and produced an economic return worth RMB 8 billion. The combination has become a most popular combination strain grown in the country, following the Xianyou 63. |
